Dear Hillel at Miami Community:

It's 12:30 PM on Monday, August 9th, 2021 and our full team of Hillel at Miami staffers is preparing for the first 50 days of programming at our Hillel. We're talking High Holidays, Welcome Back Wing Dings (it's a thing!), and scavenger hunts at Jungle Jim's. As we prepare and plan, the reality of the Delta variant of COVID-19 is all around us.

Last week, President Crawford informed the entire Miami University community of it's latest policies regarding protecting our community against COVID-19 and, as we support and uphold the communal responsibilities of all members of the greater Miami U community, we have made similar decisions regarding programming for Fall 2021 (we will be making necessary changes as things either lessen or worsen).

At Hillel at Miami:

  • Our building IS open and will remain open Sunday - Friday. All staff are present and lovingly waiting for students to arrive.

  • In keeping with the standards set forth by President Crawford, masks will be mandated for entering the building regardless of vaccination status.

  • There will be food! However, registration will be required for all events (continuing this from last year) and dining will be outside under tents with a 'grab-n-go' take out option for those who choose to eat at home.

  • High Holidays will only be open to Miami University ID carriers.

We will be sending out sign-up links for our Welcome Back Wing Ding as well as High Holiday meals and services in this Friday's Holler so please keep an eye out for this communication. Again, registration will be required in order to attend any of these events.

As I wrestled with what to do in response to COVID-19 and the health risks associated with this virus, I couldn't help but go back to one of the most basic principles in Jewish law, pikuah nefesh, 'watching over the soul'. Life and being able to live it comes first--no matter the inconvenience, no matter what. At Hillel at Miami, our goal is to connect our Jewish students so that they may connect with themselves and to each other. We hope to be a source of learning, leadership, and love within the Oxford community and beyond but we cannot do that if we cannot keep each other safe. We thank you for your continued support in keeping our students and staff healthy.

With Gratitude, Love, & Honor,
Whitney Fisch, MSW
Executive Director

P.S. We are gearing up for this year's #MoveinMiami campaign, the funds of which will help us get our Hillel kitchen back in shape after being shut down for 18 months. If we do anything at Hillel at Miami, it's feeding our students! Donate today.
