Veteran's Day,  Ladies' Night, Drinks with Dave & Book Discussion
Annual Veteran's Day Display
Hillel is partnering with Lights on Campus/Campus Ministry Center and Students for Peace & Justice to honor veterans, those currently serving in the armed forces and those killed serving in Iraq. The display is up today at the PhiDelt gates until 4:30 or 5:00. You can help us take down the display at 4:30, meet us at the hub. Please call (523-5190) or email Amy for questions.

Wednesday, November 14- Ladies Night: Girls Night Out! 6pm dinner at Hillel followed by Pottery at You're Fired
Attention all ladies: MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!!  Come to our first ladies night of the semester, Ladies Night: Girls Night Out! on Wednesday, November 14th at 6pm. We will meet at Hillel at 6pm for free dinner and then walk uptown to Your're Fired to paint some pottery.  You're Fired is specially ordering dreidles and menorahs for those who wish to paint Judaic items. Note: This program is open to both men and women.

Hillel will be covering the sitting fee for all participants. You will pay for the pottery you choose to paint.

MIX IT UP- Lunch
It's time for MIX IT UP at Lunch, the initiative sponsored by Community Advocacy Alliance (CAA), that helps us to challenge the boundaries that exist.  MIX IT UP is a simple "call to action."  We are challenged to take a new seat at lunch and meet new people and make new friends at lunch on 11/15/07.  CAA provides a complimentary lunch pass for staff, faculty, and students for Thursday, November 15th between 11:30 am & 1:30 pm in Harris Dining Hall.  Contact Janine Todd, 529-6504, Office of Diversity Affairs, to get your complimentary pass. Condolences
Hillel and the Jewish community of Oxford are saddened by the recent death of Dr. Bob Southard, husband of Dr. Edna Southard and father of Dave & Jared Southard. The funeral was Sunday 11/11. The family will sit shiva again tonight, 11/12/07 at 7 pm at their home in Liberty, Indiana, 5449 N State Route 227, Liberty, IN. Condolences may be sent to Edna at 807 Melinda Dr., Oxford, OH 45056.

Creative writing faculty Joseph Bates, cris cheek, Eric Goodman, Kelly Magee, Kay Sloan and Cathy Wagner will read short selections from their work, with all proceeds to benefit organizations fighting hunger in our area: the Food Pantry in Oxford and the Freestore/Foodbank in Cincinnati. Live music provided by Bachelor Hall.

Writers Harvest is part of Hunger Awareness week at Miami. Tuesday, November 13th is also Pledge-A-Meal. Students with any sort of Miami meal plan can pledge their dinner on November 13th, and Miami will contribute $3.25 to organizations fighting hunger in our area. ENG 230J - Jewish American Fiction Since 1945
Great new class still open - act now. Are you still looking for a class for next semester?  Take ENG 230J "Jewish American Fiction since 1945" with Professor Parks on Tuesday/Thursday from 2-3:15 p.m. for 3 credits. Sign up soon or this class may not be available!

This course will examine the contributions of Jewish-American writers to American fiction in the years since the Second World War. In addition to such issues as identity and (ambivalent) assimilation into the American mainstream, the course will explore the writer's responses to the Holocaust and to the many changes in American culture. GTM Young Composer's Award 2008

THE GUILD OF TEMPLE MUSICIANS announces GTM's Young Composer's Award 2008

 

Type

: Composition

Brief description: The 2008 requested work will be a set of three pieces, performable as separate pieces OR as a unit, with or without narrator. The work should be of 10-12 minutes duration, for SATB choir, and piano (or organ). The work should be in Hebrew, using texts from Jewish liturgy, Bible, Jewish poetry or prose, or a combination of the foregoing. For this year, the work must also be accessible to Congregational Volunteer Choirs. It is understood that his presents an added challenge to composers, but we have decided to request this for the current year in order to engage the many choirs of our communities which are at earlier stages of development.

2008 Award: $1,800.00 for the winning composition, plus performance and publication opportunities.

2008 Eligibility: Applicants should be Jewish composers from any country born on or after January 1, 1973.

Frequency of award: Annual
